Chapter Five by Des Davies

The Batman looked up at the figure that was descending slowly from the sky and his lips tightened perceptibly. Even the imposing figure of the Lord of Apokolips, Darkseid, was momentarily still as all eyes turned to look at the pale white figure draped in a green hooded cloak. There was a small smile playing around the figure’s lips.

“Superman, get Darkseid out of here now.”

The Man of Steel turned to face his long time companion but his words died on his lips at the look he received. Trusting Bruce to know what he was doing, Superman raced away in a red and blue blur. Seconds later there was a tremendous boom as he hit Darkseid with his shoulder. Unseen by anyone present he wrapped his arms around Darkseid and launched himself into the air. Within seconds they were miles away.

“Kyle, that creature is yours. You can take care of it.”

Being the newest member of the League, Kyle Rayner was the least used to The Batman taking charge so quickly. However, he’d seen the brief exchange with Superman and if he followed instructions without questioning the Dark Knight then so would Kyle. He felt cold rest in the pit of his stomach as he thought about battling the monstrosity that had consumed so many of his teammates already. Without realizing it, the certainty that The Batman had shown in his being able to handle the creature, reassured him. Reaching out with his will through the ring that sat on his finger Kyle caused a giant green vacuum cleaner to appear and it rapidly sucked the Paramorpho hosts in. He could feel the creature attempting to get a grip on the construct he had made but before it could he morphed the construct into a washing machine and activated the spin cycle. With another thought he was airborne dragging the construct and its captives along with him.

The Batman looked up steadily at the Spectre. He noted the look of annoyance that now covered its face. When he saw the hand raise in the direction of the departing Green Lantern, The Batman reacted swiftly by sending a black bat-arang in the creatures direction. It struck its target cleanly on the forehead and while it did no damage it was sufficient to break the Spectre’s concentration long enough for Kyle to leave.

“That was foolish Bruce,” the Spectre said in a voice filled with cold and emptiness. “I could have resolved the problem. Now more people will die.”

Before he could go on, in a voice that matched the Spectre, The Batman said, “Jordan. Yes I know that’s you are under that costume. I thought that you would have had the sense to stay dead. Instead you came back and now you’re trying to get your glory back.”

The coldness in the eyes of the Spectre intensified with each word. “So I should sit back and allow that abomination to take over the Earth? Just so that you don’t have to admit that you couldn’t do it?”

“I’m saying you should never have allowed that creature to be birthed in the first place rather than help it to happen. Luthor would never have found the Anti-Life Equation without help. Now you can step in at the last moment and save the day.”

“What?” there was an amazed tone in the Spectre’s voice now. “How could you know?”

“The Green Lantern weakness. I didn’t see the connection until you showed up but now everything makes sense. The creature has a weakness to the OA energy. You may no longer be a Lantern but you’d know how to set things up so that it would be vulnerable to that.”

“You’re clever Bruce. Unfortunately too clever. You’re the only one that knows the truth, except for Luthor over there, and you have no way of stopping me.”

As he spoke Hal Jordan, the latest incarnation of God’s Wrath, pointed his hand at the figure of Lex Luthor. Luthor’s eyes went wide and his arm began to flail at something only he could see. The Batman moved in and snapped a front kick at the knee of the Spectre which broke his concentration allowing Luthor to fall to the floor. The Batman noted the trail of drool running out of his mouth and the staring eyes as the body hit the floor. The Spectre simply turned to look at him.

“You cannot stop me Bruce and I cannot allow you to interfere with my plans.”

“Maybe he can’t,” drawled a voice from over the Spectre’s shoulder, “but I can.”
