Origin and Background: (American) Melanie Graham is the granddaughter of the original Golden Age hero, Pegasus. As a child, she grew up on the tales of her grandfather's adventures -- his battles against the villainous Necromancer, his triumph at Radagast's Rim (an alien space station orbiting Saturn), and his tragic disappearance three years later. She was spellbound by his life's work.
It broke her heart that world seemed to quickly forget about him (and the rest of his peers, the Mystery Brigade). Melanie dreamed of the day when her grandfather's legacy would once again take flight. It was after a sleepless night when she had a relevation. The rising sun had given her an idea. She would harness the power of the sun.
That idea would later become the Photon Generation Web that she designed and built. She spent most of her inheritance on the project. Melanie was determined to take up the mantle that her grandfather had established. When she tested her new device, something strange happened. A kaleidoscope of colour exploded around her and she disappeared. Most that knew her thought that her obsession with her grandfather had finallt taken its toll.
But the truth was much more stranger. Once the prismatic radiance faded away, Melanie found herself in a strange and almost ghostly place -- she was surrounded by a white void. She wondered if she had died and gone to heaven... or hell. Melanie was shocked to hear footsteps coming towards her.
To Melanie's surprise she found herself face to face with her grandfather. He smiled as he brushed back one of her bangs from her eyes. He explained to her that he had been keeping his eye on her for sometime now from his new home. Justin Graham was touched by her concern for his legacy, and for him. He placed his hands on her and whispered...
Suddenly Melanie Graham found herself back on earth, but now she had gained the same wings & enchanting charisma that were characteristic of the original Pegasus. She remembered his whispered words, "Look to the sky and think of me." She stretched out her newly acquired wings and did just that -- she flew upwards towards the drifting clouds.
Being the novice flyer, she almost flew directly into Navigator (of Justice Crusader fame). He recognized her potential and the need for her to receive some training in the use of her new found abilities. He invited her to join the Justice Crusaders (he figured it was the best way to keep his eye on her). She accepted his offer and quickly found herself immersed in the strange world of superheroics.
